Introducing character, Black Swan

In this post I will be analysing the introduction of Natalie Portman’s character in the Black Swan, Nina Sayers.

This opening scene presents Nina as a disciplined, fragile, and insecure dancer. An intense ballet song plays in the background to reflect Nina’s inner conflict. In a rehearsal for Swan Lake, Nina’s skill is clear however she lacks the passion and willingness needed for the role of the Black Swan. Tight close-ups highlight her vulnerability, with her anxious, stiff movements contrasting with the freedom and seduction required for the role. This scene establishes Nina’s perfectionism, her need for approval, and foreshadows her struggle to embrace the darker side of her personality as she transforms from the White Swan to the Black Swan.
