Character types

To make the film more interesting and accessible, coming-of-age films usually feature a stereotypical friend group with one of each personality type. This way, every viewer will be able to identify with at least one of the characters. Cliques are a staple to any coming of age film, with the majority of them highlighting the social structures, various friend groups within the school environment and focus on the main groups who make up these existing social hierarchies. Some common character types are listed below.

The Jock

A bully, popular, strong and influential individual who is admired by all the girls. Not very intelligent to emphasise their popularity. Always the life of the party and always causing trouble as well giving the more shy kids a hard time.

School Diva

Or ‘It girl’.This is the well liked to the point of being worshipped female student. This character type would always regard herself as the alpha female, as they are popular, pretty and very arrogant.

The Nerd

They are known to have an extreme obsession over intellect, computers or comics. This character type is normally poked fun at or even made fun of however they end up coming up with a genius revelation after some time of constantly failing. They're conventionally propped with geeky glasses and a shirt and tie.

The Rebel
The problematic teen who has a rebellious nature, they don't conform and they resist authority and control. They don't care what other people think and always try to entertain themselves to the fullest.

The Outcast 

Still finding their place in the various social groups due to awkwardness or social anxiety. They feel isolated or misunderstood due to differences in personality or interests. Their journey usually involves self-discovery and eventual acceptance.

Girl/boy next door

The Love Interest. This character is usually quite open, and is usually the childhood friend of the protagonist and if the main is a boy, she often does not recognise the feelings that the friend has for her, because of his youth and social status.

The New Girl/Boy

Different from everyone else and breaks stereotypes. Kind and intriguing, everyone wants to know more about her. Typically goes for and gets the popular guy everyone is in love with by making very little effort. 



The Best Friend

The sidekick and the main advisor to the main character. They support the protagonist with humour and loyalty, often providing a contrasting perspective. While secondary, they play a key role in the story and may have their own growth.

The Antagonist 

The antagonist creates conflict or challenges the protagonist’s growth, often representing authority, societal norms, or personal obstacles. They push the protagonist to overcome struggles and evolve.

The Wise Adult

A mentor or guide who offers the protagonist advice, perspective, or wisdom, helping them navigate challenges. Often an older figure, such as a teacher, parent, or family friend, the wise adult provides crucial life lessons that shape the protagonist’s growth. They may not always be fully involved in the action but play a key role in guiding the young character toward self-discovery.
