Analysing opening sequence, The Shining

The first opening sequence that I am going to look at is from The Shining which is a horror film.

The opening sequence of The Shining uses many conventions to establish its psychological horror tone and key themes. The film begins with the logos of Warner Bros. Aerial shots of the snow-covered mountains and the isolated which overlook the hotel create a sense of neglect, emphasising abandonment as a central theme. The slow paced editing builds suspense through atmosphere, while the eerie, score by Wendy Carlos and Rachel Elkind heightens the tension. Jack Torrance is subtly introduced, but the focus remains on the harsh environment, foreshadowing the hotel’s role in the unfolding terror. The minimalist title design complements the detached mood, allowing the atmosphere to control. Overall, the opening sets the stage for the psychological and supernatural horrors to come.
